Info: Software
Programs, programming projects, and technical history.
Introduction
I started programming on the C64 and later wrote software for AmigaOS. The Amiga years taught me about operating systems, file formats, memory, interfaces and the limits of the hardware. When I moved to PC programming, I used PureBasic as well as C, HTML, PHP, CSS and JavaScript.
Amiga software
Msi Software projects included:
- SerPrefs
- DelZero
- Filesize
- DVC
- Dextor
- AmigaT
- AWebFTPD, an FTP plugin for the AWeb browser
- SMI, a screen-mode tool
- IFI, an IFF information tool
- Marshall, a file-identification program
- BINID, a file-signature and binary-identification project
- PtPlay, a module player for the Amiga desktop, file managers and web browsers
- RunArgs.rexx, an ARexx command launcher
- Help v45.2, an AmigaDOS system help command released on Aminet in 2001
- Avidi-Miami, a configuration package for a Telenor Avidi cable modem and an Amiga
Selected software details
- SerPrefs
- A replacement for the standard Amiga serial preferences tool, with a modern interface and additional serial-port settings. It was also my first shareware release.
- DelZero
- A DOS utility born from a problem with completely full disks. It could set a file's size to zero before deletion, freeing the space needed for the filesystem to update its file table.
- DVC
- DVC checked Amiga files by scanning them for version numbers and standardizing the version string. Its later PC concept became a decentralized version-checking system based on UUIDs and JSON files, where each publisher could host its own version information.
- Dextor
- Encryption software and an encryption standard.
- AmigaT
- A system-information and script utility that checks the Amiga's CPU, chipset, Kickstart version, video mode and memory.
- Marshall
- A comprehensive file-identification program for the Amiga. It could identify more than 380 file types and show additional format-specific information such as version numbers, image dimensions, colour depth, song duration and sample rates.
- BINID
- A project born from frustration with the lack of standard file-container and version information on the Amiga, and in files generally across different platforms.
- PtPlay
- An Amiga module player that could be launched from the desktop and file managers, with support for AWeb and IBrowse workflows.
- RunArgs.rexx
- A menu-based command launcher for the Amiga, similar in spirit to the Windows Run dialog. It became popular enough to be included on official AmigaOS software release discs.
- Avidi-Miami
- A configuration package for using Telenor Avidi cable internet with an Amiga.
Other software work
- BurnIT
- I collaborated with the creator of BurnIT, an Amiga CD-recording program. My contribution involved the VideoCD work and the Red Book, White Book and Yellow Book specifications.
- PureBasic
- A BASIC-like programming language that felt closer to C underneath. I used it for Windows software, tools, game-related code and radio projects.
- BASS API include files
- I created PureBasic API include files for Un4seen Developments' BASS audio library and its BASSenc and BASSmix add-ons.
- GridStream Gridbot
- I created the GridStream chatbot, connected to Anarchy Online's chat system and able to respond to commands. It has run in different forms, first on Windows PCs and later on a Raspberry Pi.
- GridStream Player
- I wrote a desktop stream player for Windows in PureBasic and later made a web player for modern browsers. A dedicated Player information page and changelog archive are planned for later.
- Web development
- I continued working with HTML, PHP, CSS and JavaScript, from early personal pages through modern web projects.
- NTNU source code
- The source code for most of what I write while working at NTNU is kept on NTNU's internal Git server, available to NTNU employees and students. A lot of it is AI-assisted.
- GitHub
- I also put some code from my personal projects on GitHub, where it can be shared more openly than the work kept on NTNU's internal Git server.
